A Worldwide Home Renovation | Season 5

Tom and Sahara Hoskins are such a kind couple who have lived in this home for over two decades. And, because Sahara was born in North Africa and was raised overseas and then worked as a travel agent for 30 years, she had an extensive collection of unique pieces she had a collection of unique pieces from around the world I was able to incorporate into their newly remodeled Globally-inspired home.

Exterior

BEFORE

The front of the house needed an overall re-fresh. The columns were outdated and the house lacked character. We kept the brick but added shutters to make the house stand out more. The wooden shutters paired with the new front door warm up the front, and make it feel much more inviting. We also replaced the front posts with new ones, making them larger and more modern. New landscaping, new lighting and a new bench in front, finish off the exterior. If you look closely at the bench you’ll see we found an interesting way to incorporate the Hoskin’s geode collection!

Living Room

BEFORE

The living room was dark and dated. I knew I wanted to brighten it up and incorporate modern accents. We removed the old carpet and popcorn ceiling and took down the wall between the kitchen and the living room.  New wood flooring and a fresh coat of paint to the ceiling and walls went a long way in making the space much lighter and brighter. For the fireplace update, I had originally planned a fluted design, but it was more affordable to go with a tile option. Sahara told us she likes a style of Mediterranean and boho, and this tile design fits in with that. It turned out modern, bright and clean. The wood mantle warms the tile and ties in with the kitchen cabinets and the wood in the bar area, making the whole open space cohesive.

Kitchen

BEFORE

Like the living room, the kitchen was also dark and outdated. We removed the popcorn and the old LED lighting panels from the ceiling and took down the wall that divided the kitchen from the living room. Next, we added a new sliding glass door to the backyard. This, along with that gorgeous plant window, flood the kitchen with gorgeous, natural light. I knew Sahara loves Moroccan design so the goal was to incorporate that aesthetic into the kitchen by mixing natural wood with tile and woven textures. I love the unique look of these cabinets – it was so fun to try something different and I knew Sahara would love this kitchen. It now feels like a reflection of her personality – which is always the goal.

Bar Room

BEFORE

This spot is where Sahara and Tom love to hang out the most. Sahara had several old pieces – a bar, chairs and a coffee table – that she has moved around with her all of her life, and she really wanted them to have a special place in her home. Since I knew she loves textures, animal-inspired prints, wood, copper and other metals – I knew we could make a bold statement with this new bar space.

I found vintage wood corbels to frame in the entrance of the bar in order to make the room feel cozy and separate from the rest of the open floor plan. Dave and Chris turned the closet into a special wine rack with pullout drawers. I found a bold-pattern wallpaper to really create a global feel in here and we placed Sahara’s bar right in the center. Now, this is perfect space to gather with family and friends.

Main Bedroom & Bathroom

BEFORE

The bedroom refresh was surprisingly simple – new paint, new lighting and globally-inspired furniture. We also displayed the gorgeous flag box Dave built for Sahara’s dad’s flag. He served in WW2 as one of the brave young men who landed on the beaches of Normandy. It was an honor to display this flag in a way that preserves it rather than having it stored away.

In the bathroom, we removed the enormous sunken tub and moved the shower to this location. We also moved the toilet to the opposite side and added a pocket door to create a water closet. I kept the design similar to the kitchen – a bit of a Moroccan/Spanish feel – with two-toned cabinets and terra cotta flooring.

Back Patio

BEFORE

The Hoskins love hanging out in the backyard, especially since they had just gotten a new hot tub. So they asked us to create the ultimate hangout and entertaining spot. We started off by replacing the decking and railing to match the new hot tub. Then, we added a privacy wall on the hot tub side of the patio. I know they’ll be spending a lot of time here now with their friends and family!
