Forever Home on the Lake | Season 5

Written by Jenny Marrs on . Posted in .

Another lake house! This season we worked on A LOT of lake houses, and if that doesn’t convince you that Northwest Arkansas is a beautiful place to live or visit – then I don’t know what will. This lake house belongs to Rick and Lisa Phillips. Lisa grew up coming to visit NWA with her family every summer to boat and ski. Once her parents retired, they moved to the area permanently and Lisa began visiting them every summer with her husband Rick and baby Cal. Cal spent much of his childhood at his grandparent’s lake house fishing off the dock, target shooting in the woods and tubing behind his grandpa’s boat. He grew to love the area so much, that he chose to attend college at University of Arkansas, and that’s when Rick and Lisa decided to finally make NWA their official home.

They chose this lake house primarily for its location. Rick is an avid mountain biker. Lisa loves to hike and run the trails, and all three of them love to hang out on the dock to fish and swim. The house had great promise for entertaining and for hosting guests. It has large bedrooms and four full bathrooms, but the main level, the place most people would gather, wasn’t functional and it was very outdated. The Phillips really wanted a lake house everyone would want to visit and one where Cal might someday continue visiting with his own children.

Exterior

BEFORE

The house was a mix of brick, shingles and different colors. We painted it all one dark color to even it out and make it more modern. The garage door was painted as well, but we left the front door a natural wood to counter the modern exterior and provide some warmth. We also swapped out the light fixtures for larger, more updated ones.

Kitchen

BEFORE

One of the main things Rick and Lisa wanted to change was this weird hexagon-shaped kitchen. It had a large peninsula island that forced you to walk a long way around to get inside the kitchen. It was dated and not functional at all. We completely gutted the kitchen, removing a wall and the tray ceiling and making it more of an open concept. We opted for a smaller island this time for better flow. Lisa likes dark cabinets, so we chose this dark blue shade that also brings weight to this side of the house and mimics the blue water of the lake.

To the side of the kitchen, we created a dining area. There was a full bay window here before but one of the sides had old sliding glass doors. We turned the slider into windows for a more cohesive look and gave all the windows new frames. Then, we finished off the look with new lighting.

Living Room

BEFORE

This space already had a nice open concept. It just needed some updating. We scraped the popcorn ceiling and tore out the old carpet. Then, we installed new flooring here and throughout the entire house. The white oak matte finish is soft and modern. Since we had taken out the sliding glass doors from the dining area, we added a big slider here. The old fireplace had the same brick as the exterior of the home. We covered it with stone and applied a mortar wash to lighten the look. These softer shades in the fireplace and the flooring feel more in sync with the lightness of a lake house.

Bedroom

BEFORE

This was a large cedar closet that Rick and Lisa wanted to convert into a bunkroom. Our own Kim from our design team had a special connection we couldn’t pass up. Kim’s parents had a marina where we were able to snag these old row boats. Dave converted them into fun bunk beds where kids can sleep when they visit. They turned out so great and are the perfect detail to really bring home the lake house feel.

Laundry Room

BEFORE

This was a small laundry room which we made larger by absorbing some of the space from the main bedroom closet on the other side of the wall. With the larger size, we were able to turn it into a laundry room and bike room. This was much more convenient for Rick who was walking his bikes through the house to store them in the sunroom. Dave installed a bike station and kit on the wall that moves around and adjusts for storing tools. Now Rick has easier access to take his bike straight out through the garage.

Main Bedroom & Bathroom

BEFORE

The bedroom needed some updating. We gave it a fresh coat of paint, new trim, a new ceiling fan, new window treatments and new canned lighting. We also replaced the old carpet in here with the same new flooring as the rest of the house. This room used to have an old sunroom next to it where Rick had been storing his bikes. We transformed that into a sitting room with a desk for Lisa. She had wanted an office space. There was enough space here to also give them a large walk-in closet, as well as a large window seat which Dave framed out. It adds a touch of coziness to Lisa’s office and has a nice view of the beautiful lake below.
