When we first walked through the upstairs of the house, my first thought was it would make a perfect space for families to visit. I pictured a family staying in the larger room – bunkbeds on one side, a bed for parents on the other. The big closet could become a large bathroom, complete with a bathtub for kids.
Upstairs, we also have a second bedroom with its own bathroom, plus a cozy landing and a second-floor patio. The second bedroom upstairs originally had pink flowery wallpaper that had been there for ages. It seemed perfectly suited for a historic home like this, so I didn’t want to completely change the look, just update it a bit.
Both rooms came out exactly how I envisioned. And it turns out, when we met with Mike, who had lived here as a boy, he told us he and his brother had shared the bunkbed room and their grandmother had slept in the pink-wallpaper room across from them. How perfect is that? It was meant to be, and we are grateful we get to honor the historical and personal significance of this home.

Dave custom-made the bunkbeds, the larger bed, the nightstands, even the dollhouse in this room. The sweet dollhouse is a perfect recreation of The Welcome Inn – pink shutters and all. Inside this room, there’s a mixture of traditional and modern in here that feels eclectic. The muted colors, the metal curtain rods, sleek lines of the main bed and bunkbeds and the marble-top nightstands are all subtly modern. While the wood floors, original doors, Persian rug, candle-style chandelier and the little battery-operated candlestick are all details that keep with the old-world-England style of the home. My hope is that families will feel cozy in here and that they’ll build lasting memories with their kids like Dave and I have on our family trips.

This is the biggest bathroom in the house. It had been an extra room that was attached to the bedroom; maybe it had been a very large closet. We added a large bathtub, shower and bespoke details that make it look elegant while at the same time suitable for younger children. You might not have gotten a close enough look on the show, but there are some special details in here that make this bathroom really unique. The floor tile has a pattern and a bit of texture to it that make it look and feel almost like a rug. The shower tile is handmade, and so is all the hardware. Do you remember the Boman’s house from another episode? I had found three ceiling light fixtures at an antique store. I used two at the Boman’s house and the third is in this bathroom.

The same talented friend who designed the wallpaper for the downstairs bathroom and who has designed wallpaper for me in the past (remember the Boman house?) also designed the pink floral print wallpaper for this room. Like I said before, I think the idea of pink flowery paper is perfect for this historical space. I just wanted to give it a little bit of a Cotswolds-inspired modern twist. This turned out to be my favorite room in this house. I love how the new paper looks! It ties in beautifully with the natural color of the exposed brick of the old chimney.
Dave created a black metal bed frame to balance the room with old and new. It ties in with the metal curtain rods. He built the wooden wardrobe stand, which looks more traditional and matches the antique furniture I found. I picked up these nightstands and charming writing desk at a local shop. We also have the fun battery operated faux old-fashioned candlesticks in here too.

It might have been a little more work for Dave, but the arch in the shower was definitely worth it! I’ve been wanting to do an arch like that for a while. The step up to the shower makes it look grander too. We picked a beautiful penny tile for the shower floor and handmade blush-colored wall tile. The sink faucet and showerhead were handmade. The result is a feminine style that is warm, soft and serene.

The cozy landing upstairs is perfect for sitting with your morning cup of coffee. I found this small chair at an antique shop and had it reupholstered. The antique folding table came back with me from my time in Charleston during Rock the Block. I added some little vintage finds on top. The little portrait makes me laugh. There’s just something about it that made me think it needed to be here. On the wall, we made an homage to the history of this house – complete with pictures from decades ago, the bees and the remodel.
Just outside the landing is the upstairs porch. This was not safe before! I wouldn’t even step one foot on it. Dave completely redid the floor that was rotted and welded new steel banisters to replace the old wooden ones. He attached the banisters to the steel columns so it reinforced the whole structure of the house. He also handmade all the metal patio furniture guests will relax in.
