Grandma Marrs’ Peanut Butter Cookies

When I shared an impromptu video of Dave and the girls in the kitchen making Grandma Marrs’ famous (to us) Peanut Butter Cookies, I never expected the response we have received. Hundreds of texts, emails, direct messages and instagram stories later; I can officially say that y’all love Grandma Marrs’ Peanut Butter Cookies as much as our family does.

I cannot tell you how much joy it gives me to know that Grandma’s little cookie recipe is being whipped up around the globe, especially during this time of uncertainty and fear. These cookies are literally bringing families together, in the heart of the home, to bake and create happy memories that drown out the mounting tension we are all feeling. This is such an amazing reflection of who Grandma Marrs was. She literally exuded joy and loved bigger and deeper than anyone I’ve ever known. She faced fear with an unshakeable faith and she viewed time together with family as her most precious commodity. She would get an absolute kick out of the photos pouring in of her humble cookie recipe in action.

I think these cookies are so popular because 1) they’re delicious, 2) they’re easy to make, and 3) the ingredient list is short and simple. Just like in life, we can often over complicate things in the kitchen. This recipe calls for only 4 ingredients and is as straightforward as they come.

I should add that I always include a fifth ingredient in my batches: chocolate chips. Completely optional and, also, highly recommended. I should also add that these cookies are ridiculously addicting. When I was pregnant with the twins, I used to beg Dave to make these for me pretty much daily. I may or may not have eaten them by the dozen. (In my defense: I was growing two human beings. I deserved a cookie. Or twelve).

I hope these cookies bring you as much joy as they’ve brought our family over the years.

Much love,

Jenny

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Peanut Butter
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • Optional: Chocolate Chips

Instructions

1. Mix the first four ingredients together in a bowl.

2. Roll the mixture into little balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

3. Smash with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar. Then, dip the glass in sugar again to add a light sugar dusting on the top of cookies. (This is Grandma's signature step!)

4. Make imprints with a fork on top of the cookies.

5. If using chocolate chips, add a few now.

6. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.

7. Cool on parchment paper (we ran out and used foil).

* Dave recommends always making a double batch. 🙂

** When the cookies first come out of the oven, they are very soft but will harden as they cool.
